In early 2000 through late 2002, the Child Health and Development Institute (CHDI), a subsidiary of the Children’s Fund of Connecticut, Inc. facilitated a Task Force to assess the needs and plan for promoting the health and mental health of young children in Connecticut. One of the outcomes of that task force was the formation of an infant mental health work group.
The first meeting of this work group of infant mental health stakeholders was December 4, 2002. Throughout 2003, the work group met monthly to collect and review information from other state Associations for Infant Mental Health, to develop a set of by-laws for our own state Association for IMH, and plan for our first meeting.
The first meeting and seminar of the Connecticut Association for Infant Mental Health (CT-AIMH) was in May of 2004, with Dr. Marianne Barton as the keynote speaker.
Our history is best captured in the narrative that CT-AIMH prepared for our 1023 Form submitted to the IRS in our application to become a 501(c)(3) organization. CT-AIMH became a 501(c)(3) in April 2008. We welcome other states’ use of this document in their planning to establish an infant mental health organization.
